A Natural System of House Design: An Architect's Way by Charles G. Woods, In A Natural System of House Design, award-winning architect and author Charles G. Woods, AIA, sets forth a simple-to-use module "system" of design he developed over a period of 25 years. This system uses the same 4'0" square module used in the design of some of the great gothic cathedrals and in the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and others, but developed into a simpler, detailed, and adaptable (rectangles, angles, and curves) design system, helpful in both design and construction drawings, and in the construction process itself. Woods explains his system both "philosophically" as well as practically. The illustrations are by Malcolm Wells, with many cartoon-like drawings, as well as preliminary and final design-stage drawings in beautiful color. The book is unique both in its mixture of architectural design with philosophy and religion, and in its humor. Sample construction drawings and photos of woods' designs both in progress and upon completion are included. Woods' book also includes tips on energy efficiency and low-cost design. A Natural System of House Design should be of great interest to both professionals and laymen, as it is one of the few "systematic" approaches to house design in print.
Open Distribution Software Architecture Using Rm-Odp by Janis R. Putman, * Back Cover Architecting with RM-ODP is a comprehensive guide to the techniques for architecting a software system. An architect must address many complex challenges, ranging from business strategy related challenges to technology related challenges. Businesses are evolving from small, centralized, organizational endeavors to large, distributed, virtual enterprises with a multitude of endeavors. Concurrently, technologies supporting systems are evolving to support more autonomous ad distributed processing. Architecting a system for a business that meets the needs of today but is flexible enough to meet the needs of tomorrow requires a number of carefully made architectural decisions, such as: * Determining how to capture the business problem to be solved and relating this to an architectural specification * Creating specifications at the appropriate level of detail, and how to represent these through modeling tools such as UML * Ensuring conformance of the implementation to the specified architecture * Identifying ways of specific semantic behavior * Identifying ways to componentize elements of the architecture Architects of a system must address a number of technology related considerations as well. Among these are interoperability, interactions, policy driven execution, fault tolerance, quality of service, and federation. Patterns of reasoning, architectural patterns for defining a solution, for all of these considerations are found in this book. The International Standard Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) provides much in the way of fundamental concepts, rules, and patterns of reasoning for a software architecture of distributed systems. This book explores theuse of RM-ODP, augments that with best practices in industry and academia, and guides the reader to the strengths and weaknesses of RM-ODP. To be sure, RM-ODP is an internationally agreed upon methodology for clearly defining any architecture of a distributed system in an open manner.
Frederick Law Olmsted - Frederick Law Olmsted (April 26, 1822 – August 28, 1903) was a United States landscape architect, famous for designing many well-known urban parks, including Central Park in New York City, the country's oldest coordinated system of public parks and parkways in Buffalo, New York, the country's oldest state park, the Niagara Reservation in Niagara Falls, New York, Mount Royal Park in Montreal, the Metropolitan Parks System in Boston, Massachusetts, Cherokee Park (and the entire parks and parkway system) ... SkyFS - SkyFS is a fork of the OpenBFS file system, which was made available under the MIT License by the OpenBeOS project (now known as Haiku). It was adopted by Robert Szeleney (chief software architect of SkyOS) as the native SkyOS file system. Alois Vaclav Dryak - Alois Vaclav Dryak, Alois Václav Dryák, Alois Dryak (September 14, 1910 - February 6, 2005) Nephew and namesake of noted Czech architect Alois Dryák. Inventor of the DryAPT Machine Programming System, which was later called the Cinturn Macro Programming System and was the basis of Westinghouse APT. NeWS - NeWS, for Network extensible Window System, was a windowing system developed by Sun Microsystems in the late 1980s. Its primary architect was James Gosling, who subsequently designed Java.
